Friend : Congress narrowly avoided federal default earlier this week— but to get there, they’ve agreed to devastating caps on social programs people rely on while simultaneously increasing an already-bloated Pentagon budget.
It’s clear that too many in Congress are wildly out of touch with what our communities need. The recent debt ceiling negotiations exposed the cracks underlying our broken priorities — and made the push to call for People Over Pentagon more urgent than ever.
The good news ? We’re not even close to done with this fight. The People Over Pentagon Act, reintroduced this year by Reps. Barbara Lee and Mark Pocan, would redirect $100 BILLION from weapons and war — budget line items rife with waste and inefficiency — to urgent domestic needs like solar energy, education, healthcare, and veteran support — programs likely to suffer under Congress's forthcoming budget cuts.
Friend, whether you’re new to this fight or have been with us for years, it’s time to pile on the pressure and get LOUD. The reality is, activists like us have held the line against deeper cuts in the debt ceiling negotiations, and that’s why this is the moment to dig in — and demand Congress keep going and cut the Pentagon budget ! Are you with me ?

Friend, social programs are the lifeblood of our society. They ensure a safety net for people struggling, offer educational opportunities to foster future leaders, keep our communities healthy, and push us closer to a sustainable future.
The decision to cut them — while sparing the Pentagon from the budget chopping block — is a brazen display of the power of weapons lobbyists who invest millions of dollars each year to keep our priorities focused on war.
And it’s nothing short of a betrayal of our communities.
Passing the People Over Pentagon Act is how Congress can right this wrong. Luckily, the debt ceiling negotiations have mobilized hundreds of thousands of people to speak out.
The bad news is that we’re up against one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington, and they will stop at NOTHING to derail this bill. With the debt ceiling fight behind us, negotiations over the National Defense Authorization Act are heating up — and every weapons lobbyist in town is heading to the Hill to sell the lie that more weapons are what we need.
Your voice and activism is how we drown them out, flex our power — and fight for the positive change we all want and deserve. It’s time to renew our call to put the PEOPLE first. Can you join tens of thousands of other activists to send Washington a message that the era of an unaccountable Pentagon budget is over ?
Let's fight for the People Over Pentagon Act and remind those in power that we are more than collateral damage in their budget wars.
Thank you for working for peace,
Shahed, Amy, Eric, and the Win Without War team.
