Friend, The Amazon rainforest could soon reach a point of “no return.” That’s because the Amazon is rapidly losing resilience due to deforestation, and at some point in the near future it will begin drying out and transitioning into a savanna on its own. The implications of this scenario are dire : Losing the Amazon would cause drought across all of Latin America, and have ripple effects to food and water around the world. As the world’s biggest terrestrial carbon store, the loss of the Amazon would amplify the climate crisis — losing the ability to capture carbon and releasing thousands of years of storage in an unprecedented carbon bomb into our atmosphere. The shocking truth is that Bank of America is literally profiting from this brewing catastrophe and helping to push the Amazon over the edge. Take Action That’s right — Bank of America is using YOUR bank deposits to finance the Amazon’s collapse. How ? By providing capital to the world’s leading meat producer, JBS. In fact, cattle ranching is the number one culprit behind deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, and JBS is taking a leading role in this problem. JBS has been linked to as much as 1.7 million hectares of rainforest destruction in the Amazon, an area about 1.5 times the size of Hawaii’s Big Island. And the producer is notorious for a range of other unethical and destructive business practices, including excessive emissions, Indigenous land grabs and forced labor. Who would actually invest in a rainforest-destroying company like JBS? The answer is Bank of America. JBS is also breathtakingly corrupt. The majority shareholders of JBS pled guilty to foreign bribery charges in the U.S. in 2020. Last summer, a US Senate hearing on Amazon deforestation discussed JBS’ routine practice of cattle laundering — or concealing a cow’s origin to cover up its connections to deforestation and rights abuses. Most recently, in 2024, the state of New York sued JBS for “environmental greenwashing” in relation to its net zero promises. Why is Bank of America so eager to help this corrupt, deceiving corporation out?
