Romania (EKO) : IKEA's illegal wood.

Deforestation in Central and Eastern Europe's Carpathian Mountains

For nearly a decade, IKEA has been on a land-buying frenzy, snapping up old-growth forests in Romania.

The furniture giant is now the largest private landowner in the country…and shocking new reports just exposed its destructive logging practices in some of Europe’s last ancient forests.

In response, IKEA launched a PR push to discredit the research and mislead the public. But we aren’t going to let them get away with it.

If enough of us chip in, we can hit back with a massive PR push of our own to make sure the public learns the truth about where IKEA’s wood comes from – and that the company’s green image is a lie – then target its CEO with powerful ads until the company changes course.

Can you help save Romania’s ancient forests from becoming cheap furniture ?

IKEA prides itself on its environmental record, but its forest land buying frenzy tells another story. It now owns 51,000 hectares (126,000 acres) of land in Romania – where two-thirds of the country’s virgin forests have vanished since 2007.

Now, it’s been exposed for clear-cutting these forests without permits or environmental impact assessments. And this wood is ending up in furniture from Germany to France to the UK.

This crisis goes way beyond Romania. IKEA is the globe's largest individual consumer of wood – and it’s growing at a terrifying rate. During the past decade, the furniture giant DOUBLED its wood consumption !

If we don’t force the company to clean up its act, soon it will be too late. But we know that public pressure works to force IKEA to change course. In 2021, an investigation revealed it was using illegally obtained Russian wood in its children's furniture. After a major outcry, IKEA promised to stop sourcing from the company using illegally obtained wood.

Now we need to turn up the heat once again to save Romania’s remaining forests. Can you chip in so we can launch a major publicity campaign and buy hard-hitting ads to embarrass IKEA’s leadership and force them to change course ?
