You know as well as we do the stakes of the upcoming UN climate conference (COP 28), friend.
That’s why we don’t trust the CEO of the United Arab Emirates' national oil company, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber,
to lead the negotiations. Talks must focus on speeding the
transition away from the fossil fuels driving climate change and threatening
our shared future.
These sentiments were front and center in a message from members of Congress and the European Parliament in a recent letter to President Biden and European Commission President Ursula
von der Leyden.
Dr. Al Jaber is, after all, CEO of one of the largest oil companies on
the planet – a company that plans to boost oil production by 7.6
billion barrels in coming years. In refusing to step down from this role
while serving as COP president, he
has made clear where his true allegiances lie.
Tell
President Biden that we need a COP president committed to accelerating a just
transition away from fossil fuels. Not protecting industry interests.
All signs point to a year of record heat with both temperatures and human
suffering rising across the planet. Our window to avert catastrophic changes
and give our children the incredible future they deserve is closing – fast.
Oil and climate don't mix. It's just that simple.
It would be an almost laughable conflict of interest, if the stakes
weren’t so high.
There is no more time, no more excuses, no economic or environmental
rationale for the old system.
Join
us in calling on President Biden to heed the advice of Congress and the
European Parliament and work diplomatically for the removal of Dr. Al Jaber
from his role as COP 28 president and support the appointment of a new COP
president who will fight for all of us.
