Friend, Christopher Columbus should be remembered as nothing more than a colonizer. Columbus is directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and mutilations. Meanwhile, he’s indirectly responsible for a centuries-long legacy of subjugation, disease, slavery, and massive amounts of death. Despite this reality, over a dozen states in the United States still celebrate Columbus Day, refusing to recognize the reality of his legacy – and by whitewashing his sins, those states help mask the lessons of history that we cannot forget. Two years ago, President Biden signed into law legislation recognizing Indigenous People’s Day as a federal holiday – a critical step in recognizing, remembering, and celebrating the history of all of the native peoples on this land. But recognizing Christopher Columbus on the same day not only sends a mixed message about the priorities of who we should remember, but cheapens the memories of those we seek to revere by putting them alongside a genocidal maniac. For future generations,
