#BringAbdiHome : Stop the deportation of my husband, Abdikadir Mohamed

Tell ICE Field Director John Tsoukaris :
Release Abdi now

Dear friend,

I need your help. I've been waiting to reunite with my husband for years and now his life is under threat. My husband, Abdikadir Mohamed, is a Somali immigrant that was stripped of his legal status under the Muslim ban. He has been held in an immigration detention center for nearly a year and a half.1 My two children and I want him back safely with us.

Days after his inauguration, Trump signed an Executive Order that banned immigrants, refugees and visa holders from Muslim majority countries such as Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen from traveling and migrating to the United States. My husband's detainment is what happens when a xenophobic and Islamophobic administration goes unchecked. Most frighteningly, Abdi contracted tuberculosis while in detention and has been denied proper medical care. I am very concerned about Abdi's health and it pains me to know that he's suffering alone without anyone to take care of him.

On top of everything, I have been forced to raise our two baby daughters by myself since this nightmare started. Please consider signing my petition demanding ICE Field Director John Tsoukaris to immediately release Abdi and allow him to petition his case from home.

If enough of us take a stand against this blatant disregard for Abdi's life then we will be able to secure my husband's release. Alexander, will you join me in this fight ?

Sign the petition: Immediately release Abdi to his family.

On December 13, 2017, Abdi was traveling home to Ohio when he was detained at JFK airport. Abdi, a legal permanent resident, had just passed through customs and immigration inspection when he was stopped by an officer who asked if he was from Somalia. Abdi was later questioned for 15 hours, without a translator despite asking for one, then transferred to Elizabeth Detention Center where he has been detained ever since, ten hours away from his family.

One month later, Abdi was sent to a hospital because he was in excruciating pain, unable to get out of bed to eat or use the bathroom. Abdi had complained of chest pain to the medical staff at the detention center for eight months but was only given pain medication and antacids. During his ten-day hospitalization, Abdi was chained to the bed by his legs and an arm, with two armed guards at the door at all times. His lungs were drained several times.

Without an interpreter, he understood the doctors to be telling him he had a lung infection. He was tested and diagnosed with active TB. This is unacceptable. Had ICE doctors properly treated Abdi, they could have easily avoided this result. This is Trump's America. Despite having entered the United States with a valid green card, Abdi is now locked up in a cell fighting for his life.

Abdi needs medical care, not incarceration. Demand ICE officials release Abdi now.

Abdi’s detention and the thousands of immigrants locked up in cages is a signal to all of us that no one is safe. Trump and his cronies have been very transparent about their plans to target Black and Brown communities. As Black immigrants, we are worthy of protection. The Trump administration cannot be allowed to treat us as disposable. We must stop this administration’s attempt to stoke fear and wreak havoc on Black immigrant communities.

We keep our communities safe. When we remain fiercely opposed to Trump's xenophobic, racist and Islamophobic agenda -- we can win. Earlier this year, our movement successfully stopped the detention of She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph -- the Atlanta-based musical artist professionally known as 21 Savage and father of three children.2 Over and over again, ICE officials used every trick in their playbook including racist tropes of Black people to justify the caging of a man with deep ties to this country.3 None of it worked. After 9 days of mass mobilization, Shey'aa was reunited with his family. We are powerful enough to do it again, but we need your help. Will you join us ?

Tell ICE Officials: Release Abdi now.

Much love and appreciation,

Malyuun Mohamed, Abdi's wife
