Hey dear friend,
You may have seen a New York Times report this week that Trump has outspent every Democratic candidate for the 2020 election on Facebook advertisements.1
But you may be thinking : Facebook ads ? What do they have to do with the election ?
Let me give you a breakdown :
- 7 out of 10 US adults have Facebook- that’s over 250 million people2,3
- Facebook ads can easily reach hundreds of thousands of people every single day-- and the more money you spend, the more people see your ads
- The more people that Trump’s campaign is reaching on Facebook, the more people are hearing his messages of racism and hate. Some of his top Facebook ads have included messages like “Shut the border”, “End chain migration now !”, and “Fake news attacks”1
Trump is even tokenizing Black people to try to manipulate Black voters. He’s used photo-ops with formerly incarcerated Black people in Facebook ads that say “I am fighting for ALL Americans”, and is showing them in key swing states where Black voters will be key.4
Luckily, we have a Facebook ads program of our own, and we’re ready to clap back. Our Facebook ads tell people how to fight cash bail and mass incarceration, how to help people in Flint get clean water, how to restore voting rights to formerly incarcerated people. In other words, we’re giving people the information they need to fight back against everything Trump stands for.
Dear friend, let’s use Facebook to spread a message of Black Liberation and Black Joy, and make sure that Trump’s hateful ads aren’t the only thing dominating this country’s Facebook feeds.
Until justice is real,
