Dear friend,
Kamala Harris just finished speaking at the Democratic National Convention, and her speech … all we can say is WOW.
She drove home the case against Donald Trump and Mike Pence like only she could, while offering a vision of justice for all.
As she said, "In this election we have a chance to change the course of history. We're all in this fight… so let's fight with conviction. Let’s fight with hope. Let’s fight with a commitment to each other."
But as you read this, Trump and the right-wing media are doubling down on a new round of misogynist and racist attacks on Harris, questioning her citizenship, attacking her voice, her clothes, her appearance . . . the whole repulsive litany of sexist and racist tropes.
We knew this was coming, and we had a plan in place to counter these disgusting attacks. Even before Harris was selected, we published a guide for covering racism and sexism in politics that has been covered by major news outlets, including The Washington Post and ABC.1
Then, when Newsweek published an outrageously racist op-ed, falsely questioning Harris' eligibility to be vice president, the backlash was swift, and Newsweek was forced to apologize.2
Donald Trump won in 2016 with a campaign of sexism and racism, and now he's at it again with Kamala Harris as his direct target. Within hours of Joe Biden announcing Harris as his running mate, the vitriol started. Tucker Carlson refused to pronounce her name correctly.3 Trump called her "very, very, nasty."4
We're fighting back because we can't leave it to Kamala to respond to this viciousness. But we know these attacks are going to keep coming -- and even as you read this, you can bet that too much mainstream media attention is focusing on how Harris looked, not what she said.
We're demanding that the news media adopt policies against racist, sexist coverage. We're holding them accountable when they spread misinformation and bigotry. And we're running ads to inoculate voters against baseless attacks on Harris.
