Republicans are threatening to default on our nation's debts and / or to shut down the government in order to force unconscionable cuts to social spending, including Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

This is like something a comic book villain would do–send an ultimatum threatening that the government must give in to a series of outrageous demands or else everyone in the country will suffer.
