Friend, we need to talk about equity and higher education, because our current system just isn't working fairly.
It’s one of those not-so-secret dirty-little-secrets. When it comes to college admissions, the children and grandchildren of alumni and donors have an edge when it comes to getting into elite colleges and universities.
That’s not right. Not only is it unfair to equally-qualified students, it perpetuates decades-old legacies of racism and inequality. Think about it. The kids of wealthy donors and graduates of elite universities are the last students who need an extra hand up. There are lots of children of donors and alumni who are very strong applicants, and they of course deserve a fair chance at admissions -- just not a preference.
College is an incredible engine of opportunity and we should be helping extend that opportunity to first generation college students and kids from historically underserved communities, not making it harder for them to compete.
Our friends at Daily Kos are helping push this important policy. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, but together, I think we can make a difference on this critical issue.
