A deadly and destructive form of fishing called bottom trawling is putting Europe’s marine protected areas (MPAs) in grave danger. Over the last 9 years, fishing vessels have spent more than 4 MILLION hours bottom trawling in EU MPAs. To put this in perspective, 4 million hours is more than 500 years worth of trawling, just in the last decade alone.
Bottom trawling involves dragging heavy nets — some hundreds of metres long and up to five tonnes — across fragile ocean seabeds, where they scrape away centuries-old reefs and destroy endangered marine life — and EU leaders are allowing this to happen. Every day, dolphins, sharks, turtles, and other animals are swept up and killed at random. If we want to truly protect Europe’s seas, then bottom trawling in protected areas must stop now.

Across the world, marine life is vanishing from our seas at an alarming rate — according to the Marine Conservation Institute, “90% of global fish populations are fully-fished or overfished.”
Every drag of the net of bottom trawling is a blow to the biodiversity of our oceans. In fact, 59% of Europe's so-called marine protected areas (MPAs) are regularly trawled, often at higher levels than unprotected areas — with vulnerable wildlife at greater risk within the boundaries of these supposed sanctuaries.
This relentless destruction, sanctioned by EU leaders within areas meant to be protected, cannot be the legacy we leave for future generations.
