Friend, it’s already begun.
A few weeks ago, we sent you a message about how the Supreme Court’s gutting of Roe v. Wade would open the floodgates for states to criminalize abortion and punish pregnant people. And some states are out in force.
Texas has banned abortion after 15 weeks, with no exemptions for rape or incest. State legislators are trying to ban people from crossing state lines for abortions. Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives have initially passed an amendment to their state constitution to curtail abortion.
When a national outcry arose over a 10 year old who was raped and had to travel from Ohio to Indiana to receive an abortion, Indiana attorney Jim Bopp, who wrote model abortion ban legislation under consideration around the country, told a reporter : “[the 10 year old] would have had the baby, and as many women who have had babies as a result of rape, we would hope that she would understand the reason and ultimately the benefit of having the child.”[1]
We wish that this wasn’t happening across the country, but this is exactly what happens when people who fight to deny others rights are handed a victory. They have started a fight that we will finish.
For years, anti-choice lawmakers said that they wanted to return the question to the states – and the fight would end there. Now, major Congressional leaders are saying they want to explore a full, federal ban on abortion. That’s what this Supreme Court has enabled.
This injustice is simply far too egregious for us to sit on the sidelines. We need every advocate for justice to stand up and fight back.
For Future Generations,
Team HHC.
