In the weeks following the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas lawmakers moved quickly to nearly $50 million to fund bullet-resistant shields for police. After the inaction of cowardly police, lawmakers' primary solution–if their budget is to be believed–is to further arm police.
In cities across America, police departments have dipped into emergency COVID money for items unrelated to public health care or services, while many places are at risk of running out of public funds to provide essential COVID-19 services such as free testing and vaccinations.
Even when folks broadly recognize that the police themselves are the problem, such as the a damning report on the Minneapolis Police Department's deeply rooted culture of racial discrimination, solutions often involve increased funding for police for programs like anti-bias training for officers which has proven ineffective. Police don't provide sufficient data to prove their claims about crime rates, they are frequent abusers of the public, particularly Black people, and they actively obstruct efforts at accountability. Still, many in the ranks wildly abuse overtime to rake in exorbitant income.
Lack of money is not the reason our police departments are rotting with corruption. It's time to stop throwing more money in the fire, and redirect that money to actually serve communities.
