Hi friend,

Momentum is on our side.

More than 24,000 people from around the world — including you ! — have signed the open letter calling on Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the New Zealand Government to properly protect the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana. This international wave of support is helping to ensure the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Marine Protection Bill fulfills its purpose of revitalizing this vital marine ecosystem — but there's still more work to do.

We’re in a critical window of opportunity to pressure the Government to reverse its last-minute decision to allow commercial fishing in protected areas. We cannot let up until New Zealand's leaders pass the strongest possible version of the Bill — free of loopholes that undermine the protections the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana desperately needs.

Today, we're writing to share three key updates on your campaign :

📣 Your voice helped send a powerful message to Parliament

Last week, the open letter you signed was presented to members of Parliament in advance of the second reading of the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill. This joint delivery of the open letter and 23,000+ signatures, led by our partners WWF-New Zealand alongside Forest & Bird and Greenpeace Aotearoa, was a powerful demonstration of the overwhelming public support for restoring the Gulf.

🔬 New evidence reveals ignored expert advice

Recently released Government briefing documents show that experts strongly opposed allowing commercial fishing in high protection areas, stating that the move would "undermine biodiversity outcomes" and "create significant equity issues.” The recommendations were clear that commercial fishers could easily relocate elsewhere in the Gulf with "minimal impact,” underscoring how vital it is for us to keep the pressure on the Prime Minister to ensure science, not politics, guides the Gulf’s future.

🌊 Momentum is building

There’s growing media coverage and public interest in this campaign, but we need to continue to amplify this fight globally to make sure the Government reverses course. For your next action :

More than a decade of work by local communities, tangata whenua (Te reo Māori for “people of the land”) and advocacy groups has gotten us to this critical moment. Together, we can show the New Zealand Government that the world is watching — and demanding meaningful protections for the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana.

Thank you for standing with us. Your support is making waves, and we’ll be in touch soon with more ways you can help.
