Your voice helped send a powerful message to Parliament
Last week, the open letter you signed was presented to members of Parliament in advance of the second reading of the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill. This joint delivery of the open letter and 23,000+ signatures, led by our partners WWF-New Zealand alongside Forest & Bird and Greenpeace Aotearoa, was a powerful demonstration of the overwhelming public support for restoring the Gulf.
New evidence reveals ignored expert advice Recently released Government briefing documents show that experts strongly opposed allowing commercial fishing in high protection areas, stating that the move would "undermine biodiversity outcomes" and "create significant equity issues.” The recommendations were clear that commercial fishers could easily relocate elsewhere in the Gulf with "minimal impact,” underscoring how vital it is for us to keep the pressure on the Prime Minister to ensure science, not politics, guides the Gulf’s future.
Momentum is building
