RECORD YOUR VIDEO

Hi  friend,

April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week, a week where we lift up the ongoing racism Black birthing people continue to experience in the U.S. medical system.

We're looking for people who care about Black Maternal Health to record videos answering this question : What would a world look like where we protect and prioritize Black Maternal Health?

If you're willing to share your personal experience with the health care system, we honor and value your story. But we'd also love to hear from you if you're someone who stands in solidarity with Black birthing people everywhere. We'll be lifting up your stories on our social media and as part of our campaigns to fight for Black Maternal Health, this week and beyond.

Here’s the link to record your video. It'll only take a few minutes, and we've included talking points and instructions below.

After you submit your video, we’ll professionally edit it, adding logos and captions, and then send it back to you to share. We’ll also be sharing many of these videos on our social media channels.

Dear friend, thank you for all you do to fight for racial justice and Black Maternal Health !

TALKING POINTS TO HELP GUIDE YOUR VIDEO MESSAGE (but make the video your own and tell your own story too !)

 1. Having a child is an existential threat for Black birthing people in the U.S. Regardless of factors like higher education or financial means, Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes than white mothers.

2. These deaths are preventable, and their causes are rooted in structural racism, not race. Black, brown, and Indigenous people face bias from medical providers and insurance companies and are often treated with condescension or driven to make healthcare decisions from a place of fear. Black trans men also face serious barriers to accessing adequate reproductive healthcare needed for their pregnancies—often being discriminated against or flat out refused care by doctors.

3. These devastating pregnancy outcomes have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many Black mothers have been forced to go their entire pregnancies without in-person care, putting them at risk for life-threatening complications and in some cases death.

4. Close by calling for an anti-racist health care model which prioritizes the needs of Black birthing people !

PLEASE READ : Video Recording Tips

  1. You should aim to make your video 3 minutes or less ! If you try recording and it cuts you off, please record again.
  1. You can record your video on your phone or your computer. If you do it on your phone, it's best to record it directly on your phone's camera app and then try to upload it by clicking "Upload Your Video" on the video page.

Sometimes the video files are too large to upload, and it may be taking a long time. If this happens, you can upload the video to Google Drive by following these directions and email it to scott.brown@colorofchange.org.
  1. Record in a place with good lighting and without too much background noise
