Friend, The coronavirus pandemic has now been raging on for over a year. Millions of Americans — disproportionately Black, brown, and working-class — have struggled with a lack of healthcare, record unemployment, and instability since then. And from the very beginning, Rep. Jamaal Bowman has called for a rent moratorium until we get the coronavirus pandemic under control and housing as a human right — all under his proposed New Deal For Housing. And right now, we’re excited to share some of that plan with you below. When you finish reading, will you add your name in support of the New Deal For Housing?
Jamaal’s New Deal For Housing calls for several priorities, including :
- National Rent Control : Impose a cap on rent increases at 150% of the consumer price index, or 3% — whichever is higher — giving renters security in their homes.
- Eviction Protections : Tenants must have the right to renew their lease and organize for safe living conditions in their homes without the fear of retaliatory eviction.
- Expanding Right to Counsel : With the right to counsel in housing court, tenants would have access to free legal advice when facing an eviction case. In New York City, Right to Counsel has reduced evictions in the ZIP codes where it has already been phased in.
- Investing in social and public housing : Recommit to public and social housing and ensure that everyone in New York’s 16th District has a guaranteed home.
In Congress, Jamaal will push for bold, progressive change that meets our current moment. But our campaign is powered by the people, and it’s on us to help him get there. The success of this plan depends entirely on how hard we rally together and fight for it.
