Friend,
In 2017, President Trump shrunk Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments – ignoring more than two million people across the country, and the interests of Tribal nations, local community leaders, small businesses, and scientists who supported protecting these national treasures. Every day that Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante remain unprotected leaves these fragile landscapes susceptible to damage.
We have an opportunity to reverse this monumental mistake and restore protections for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. Last week, Secretary Deb Haaland visited Utah to review the shrinking of these national monuments as part of President Biden’s executive order. This trip will help inform Secretary Haaland’s recommendations to the President regarding boundary revisions. The purpose of national monument designations is to create permanent protections for America’s most special places. Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments were designated by Presidents Clinton and Obama to safeguard Native American sacred sites, irreplaceable archeological areas, and lands of extraordinary biodiversity. The national monuments also encourage business investment and community growth, while providing an unforgettable place for locals and visitors to spend time outdoors. Thank you for your commitment to protecting these national treasures.
Yours in conservation,
The Trust for Public Land.
