Dear friend sign and send the petition to the U.S. Senate: The filibuster must not get in the way of gender equality. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation. We have the states needed for ratification. The problem now is a deadline was put in place for ratification by 1982. In March 2021, the House passed a joint resolution that would remove a deadline for states to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. That resolution will now go to the Senate. If passed, the roadblock for ratifying equal rights for all in the Constitution will be removed. And yet, we face ANOTHER roadblock in the Senate, one which will make removing the ERA deadline extremely difficult : the filibuster. Even with a Democratic majority, the filibuster prevents passing landmark legislation like the removal of the ERA deadline. If we are going to pass any meaningful legislation on gender equality, racial justice, the climate crisis, and anti-discrimination bills, among many other issues, we must first eliminate the filibuster. That is why we’re calling on the Senate to do just that. Thanks for all you do, Erin Tulley, Daily Kos. | |||||
