U.S (Color Of Change) : The racist rule enabling Mitch McCONNELL's obstruction.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dear friend,

 

 

 

Recently, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the quiet part out loud. He told a reporter that “100% of my focus is on stopping this new administration”. McConnell has been open for years about his intention to block every piece of legislation that could improve the lives of Black people. Right now, Senate Democrats are letting him get away with it. That’s unacceptable. Tell Senate Democrats to stand up to Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans.

 

 

 

The Constitution created Congress to address the problems people across the country faced every day. That’s not how it works today because of an overused Senate rule called the Jim Crow Filibuster. This one rule gives any senator the power to single handedly block any bill from a final vote and it has been used by racist senators throughout history to block bills that would help Black people.

 

 

 

Friend, that is why we launched a website on the history of the filibuster: to inform you and our Senate that we cannot pursue a democratic agenda without reforming this archaic rule.

 

 

 

The Jim Crow Filibuster has been used in the past to block anti-lynching legislation, protect poll taxes, and delay the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today, senators like Mitch McConnell and Ted Cruz exploit the filibuster and are using it to block attempts to combat voter suppression, forgive student loans, raise the minimum wage, and pass universal background checks for gun purchases.

 

It doesn’t have to be this way. Senate Democrats have the votes they need to reform the filibuster, end the gridlock in Washington, and enact a bold agenda that would begin to address the needs of Black people. We can win this fight, but It will take all of us to send a clear message : The Senate can no longer abandon its legislative duty. Tell Senate Democrats to reform the Jim Crow Filibuster and get to work for the American people.
