In 2020, the Trump Administration implemented a policy (Title 42) using the COVID pandemic as a pretext to deny asylum seekers at the southern border.
Never mind that the Center for Disease Control believed it was unnecessary. Trump aide Stephen Miller was eager to implement his racist, anti-immigrant agenda—and found a reason. Under pressure from Miler and Vice President Mike Pence, the C.D.C. relented.
One year later, the Biden Administration has yet to reverse this policy. Even after 60 House members wrote a letter in February urging an end to Title 42. Under this policy, hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers have been expelled without due process—including many Haitian children. Now, United Nations (U.N.) High Commissioner for Refugees Fillippo Grandi has urged the Biden Administration to "swiftly lift the public health-related asylum restrictions that remain in effect at the border and to restore access to asylum for the people whose lives depend on it, in line with international legal and human rights obligations."
While the Biden Administration has agreed to some concessions, Grandi and others have said that does not go far enough. These racist Title 42 restrictions have to go.
The COVID pandemic is coming under control, as more Americans get vaccinated. But even under that excuse, Title 42 was unnecessary a year ago. It was really about implementing Donald Trump and Stephen Miller's racist agenda to deny immigrants safe harbor—an agenda the American people soundly rejected when they elected Joe Biden last fall.
It is time for the Biden-Harris Administration to deliver what they promised : a clean break from the racist, mean-spirited and divisive Trump legacy on immigration. Our message to the Biden Administration : Title 42 was a mean-spirited, racist policy enacted under the false presumptions of a COVID pandemic that your administration has diligently worked hard to since bring under control. It is long past time to reverse the Trump Administration's policy and stop these Title 42 expulsions.
