Friend,
The pandemic has made most of the world poorer–with women, Black people, Indigenous peoples, and historically marginalized and oppressed communities being pushed the deepest into despair. Meanwhile, billionaires have profited off of the pandemic, continuing to amass wealth amidst global suffering. This is a gross inequity, but we have the ability to right the wrong here in the US by making sure corporations and the very rich pay their fair share.
This past year has called on all Americans to make unprecedented sacrifices. But a small number of people–namely corporate CEOs and wealthy investors–have made huge profits amidst the pandemic, while the rest of us have struggled. Even worse, these same rich companies and wealthy executives have not contributed their fair share in taxes. No one person or company represents this stark inequality better than Jeff Bezos and Amazon.
In a year when so many families were struggling to keep their jobs and stay safe from COVID-19, the average US worker paid a tax rate of 22%. Amazon, on the other hand, made a record $20 billion in US profits during the pandemic yet paid only 9% in federal taxes. It’s time to tax the rich and start evening the playing field. If Amazon paid the current US corporate tax rate of 21%, it would pay an additional $2.5 billion in taxes a year–enough to provide food assistance to 1.7 million Americans facing hunger.
Implementing a 3% wealth tax on Jeff Bezos would generate $6 billion in revenue from his $198 billion fortune–that's enough to provide childcare to every child under four in Amazon’s home state of Washington_440,000 children.
Creating a pandemic profits tax on Amazon would yield $11 billion in additional revenue–that's enough to vaccinate 580 million people globally.
Amazon and companies like it must pay their fair share. Increasing taxes on the wealthiest companies could fund child care, feed families, and lift people out of poverty. This country will never achieve a fair and equitable recovery from COVID-19 if we continue to have a system where corporations and the wealthy get richer while everyone else is left behind.
At Oxfam, we are committed to holding the powerful accountable. We must fight for those of us who are struggling the most.
