Friend,
The pandemic exacerbated and further exposed many other already-existing issues like housing crises, health inequities, economic inequities, hunger crises, and so much more.
We can’t go back to “normal,” because “normal” has been working to serve the ultra-rich instead of the people.
In 2020, almost 1 in 4 households experienced food insecurity, and, as usual, communities of color and low-income families were disproportionately impacted, while billionaires added trillions to their wealth by exploiting their workers.
Among these households were millions of children going hungry and millions of parents unsure of when their families’ next meal would be. That is unacceptable. It doesn’t need to be this way.
No child or family should be shamed or be burdened with debt because they can’t afford to eat. Every child deserves to have a safe learning environment that is free of hunger and starvation, which makes it more difficult to focus, learn, and thrive in school.
Every child deserves a guaranteed breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Under the Trump administration, Republicans gave a $1.9 trillion tax cut to billionaires who have subsequently gotten over $1 trillion richer during the pandemic. We can and must do better, and part of that must be ensuring that no person—and no child in the richest country in the world—goes hungry.
Thanks for all you do,
MoveOn.
