Women are essential to the workforce in America. Women now make up more than half of the workforce, and two-thirds of women are either the primary or co-breadwinner in their household. Of these women, three-quarters will be pregnant at one point in their career.
Many pregnant women will face some sort of conflict regarding their duties due to their pregnancy. Women are forced to quit their jobs or even work more than necessary to keep earning their paycheck.
The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (H.R. 1065) would create a national standard for workplaces to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers. Pregnant workers would not be required to take leave if another reasonable accommodation is available. This aspect allows a pregnant employee the ability to do what is best for their health and family without the fear of losing pay and their job.
Research shows that stress from job loss can cause premature birth or even loss of a baby. Women should not have to choose between employment and a healthy pregnancy. Every pregnant worker deserves the opportunity to work to support their family without risking the health of their pregnancy. We must end this unfair pressure on pregnant workers.
