Friend, millions of Americans on Medicare lack coverage they need for basic health care. From hearing aids to root canals to eyeglasses, elderly Americans are forced to pay out of pocket for essential medical care. The human costs are staggering.
And now we have a chance to change things. Representative Pramila Jayapal and Senator Bernie Sanders are leading a new charge to expand Medicare—by offering vision, dental, and hearing care for Medicare beneficiaries, and lowering the Medicare eligibility age.
This is a critical first step towards Medicare for All and will help millions along the way. Can you help build support in Congress by sending your representative and Senators a message ? No one should fear what it may cost to get the health care they need, and that must include vision and dental.
Lack of dental care can exacerbate conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, contribute to delayed diagnosis of serious medical conditions, and lead to preventable complications that sometimes result in costly emergency room visits. But the harm of denying dental care is draconian in and of itself.
Over 70% of Medicare beneficiaries who have trouble eating due to their teeth were unable to see a dentist. By denying dental care to Medicare recipients, we are making it harder for the most vulnerable elders to meet their basic needs.
Rep. Jayapal and Sen. Sanders, two of the strongest advocates of Medicare for All, are pushing to expand Medicare by offering dental care, as well as vision and hearing care -- and lowering the age when everyone becomes eligible for Medicare. It’s something we desperately need right now. But Congress won’t act if you don’t speak out. Keep fighting, Demand Progress.
