Week In Review.

What a week ! The 2021-2022 legislative session ended late Thursday night, wrapping up VOCAL-NY’s most successful session since the organization’s founding. At the end of the day, we took care of “Unfinished Business” from the budget and won six of our priority bills, with two policies already signed by the governor. All together, we’re proud to have helped passed the following bills this session :

Legislation to Repeal Jim Crow Prison-Voting Bans, which has been signed (See Coverage in CBS here)

Legislation to ensure #MarijuanaJustice, which has been signed (See Coverage in ABC here)

Legislation to Remove Prior Authorization for Medication-Assisted Treatment for New Yorkers Enrolled in Medicaid (See Coverage in Spectrum here)

Legislation to Ensure Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in all NYS Prisons and Jails (See WCAX Coverage here)

Legislation to Decriminalize Syringes and Remove Limits at Expanded Syringe Access Programs (ESAP) (See Times Union Coverage here)

The House Our Neighbors With Dignity Act (HONDA), Which Converts Distressed Hotels into Affordable Housing (See Coverage in The Real Deal here).

Unfortunately, two parole justice bills -- Fair and Timely, and Elder Parole -- did not receive final votes after leaders and coalition partners fought hard to see it pass. But VOCAL-NY’s Civil Rights Union will be back next session, ready to fight to ensure New Yorkers are released back to their communities and families.
