Dear friend,
After six months of public pressure, millions of petition signatures, and statements from the Grand Jurors about Daniel Cameron’s fraudulent trial, two Louisville police officers connected to the murder of Breonna Taylor have been formally terminated by the force.
Here’s what you need to know :
- Detective Joshua Jaynes, who secured the warrant for the March 13th raid on Taylor’s home, and Detective Myles Cosgrove, who fired the shot that ended Breonna’s life, were fired from the Louisville PD this week.
- The termination letter for both Detectives cited that they violated department policy.
Ultimately, it was determined that Detective Jaynes lied in the affidavit he submitted, leveraging his badge and lack of integrity to gain an unlawful warrant. And Detective Cosgrove demonstrated a blatant disregard for human life when he fired 16 shots into Breonna’s home, resulting in her untimely death.
Dear friend, we’re here to let you know we are, and will always be, working to dismantle centuries of anti-Black violence. This is an important victory. But we want to be clear: winning the battle in Louisville doesn’t mean we’ve won the war. And it certainly is not the justice that Breonna Taylor deserves. There is a national crisis of state violence against Black women. And by firing these officers for violating department policy, as opposed to murdering a civilian, we know that the fight to protect Black women is FAR from over.
We’re going to keep fighting like hell to make this world a less hostile place for Black people. Are you ready to fight with us to end police terror and state-funded anti-Black violence ?
We’re not just demanding justice for Breonna in Lousiville, we’re fighting for the safety of Black women nationwide. It’s been nearly two years since Chicago Police violated Anjanette Young, another Black woman, who was subjected to the arbitrary danger of no-knock warrant policing. And Mayor Lori Lightfoot is just now pushing for meaningless accountability measures for the officers involved in the botched raid. Police officers who terrorize Black people should not be placed on paid desk duty.
Dear friend, when we raised our voices in Louisville, the city voted to ban no-knock warrants, like the one used the morning Breonna was murdered. This is how we win justice : by holding powerful actors accountable through public pressure, direct action, and not letting up.
That’s what we do — we win justice for Black people, and this victory with the Louisville Police Department should remind us all that the true power of the people is more powerful than the people in power.
Until Justice is Real,
Scott, Erika, Malachi, Ariel, Megan, Ernie, Madison, Trevor, Ana, and the rest of the COC team.
