Hold House Republicans accountable for refusing to support the Violence Against Women Act.Dear friend,
A day after a man entered three separate Atlanta area massage parlors and gunned down eight people — seven of them women — the House voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Unfortunately, they didn't speak in one resounding voice against such brutal crimes against women.
Only 29 Republicans voted to support the bill's reauthorization. The vast majority of Republicans — 172 — voted against it.
What possible justification do Republican legislators have to deny women protections against violence? None whatsoever. Sign our petition to condemn House Republicans for voting against the VAWA. The Violence Against Women Act was sponsored by then-Senator Joe Biden and signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994. But under the Trump administration, it was allowed to expire.
Now, Democrats are picking up the pieces of this legislation and working to reauthorize it as soon as possible.
The law provided billions of dollars for investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women, imposed mandatory restitution on those convicted, established a dedicated office within the Dept. of Justice for violent crimes against women, and among other things, banned husbands convicted of violent crimes against their spouses from owning firearms.
Thanks for taking action.
