Dear friend,
I want to thank you for joining us in our ongoing fight to demand justice for Black people.
None of our pivotal work would be possible without the financial support of members like you. That is why I wanted to share more about the work we are doing to advocate for holistic gun violence prevention programs. For the last 50 years, the gun violence epidemic in our communities has been compounded by structural racism and policies rooted in anti-Blackness, criminalization, and policing.
If you’re anything like me, you’re concerned, friend. You are concerned about the deafening chant that promotes increased police funding as a response to gun violence. Many of us have been duped into believing that law enforcement is critical to preserving public safety. But if our anti-violence movements are to be successful, we have to trust in the expertise of communities most impacted by this crisis and invest in peer-intervention programs that actually keep people safe.
At Color of Change, we are committed to dismantling our corrupt criminal justice system, which is why we are fighting for federal investments in community-led prevention programs. However, we depend on grassroots fundraising to power our critical campaigns. When it comes to fundraising, there is no magic number — we know it's going to take all of us pooling our resources to stop the systemic crises that have led to gun violence across the country.
Many of the policies that are now synonymous with racial bias in the justice system — Stop & Frisk, 3 strikes laws, the 1994 crime bill — were initially offered as solutions to gun violence. But they haven't worked. Instead, they have led to mass surveillance, criminalization, and incarceration in Black and brown communities.
Right now, the best way to fight back is to fund the hard work organizations like Color Of Change are doing to hold our elected officials and policymakers accountable. We are up against opposition with seemingly unlimited resources and with political ties at every level of government. If we do not take steps to deter elected officials from supporting police violence and criminalization in our communities then we risk losing countless Black lives.
Dear friend, will you consider chipping in to power the movement to end gun violence and the criminalization of Black communities ? We’d like to invite you to give the amount that feels most powerful to you.
Ultimately, I believe that we can win.
Until Justice is Real,
Scott Roberts and the Criminal Justice Team .
