Dear friend — Marta Sánchez knows a survivor when she sees one. “When I see a couple on the bus, and the female has suffered violence, you can see it in her eyes, in her face,” Sánchez says. “You can see she is suffering.”
Sánchez and a small group of women volunteers lead an effort to stop violence against women in El Salvador. Women from the Center are working in 29 communities, training women about their basic rights and how to better protect themselves.
Friend, the work Sánchez and others like her are doing across Central America is amazing, but more systems need to be in place for those facing gender-based persecution. Every day, countless people face gender-based violence and persecution that forces them to leave their homes in search of safety and security. Their own governments are typically of little help, and that’s why Oxfam America is calling on President Biden to protect the rights of people fleeing gender-based violence and persecution. Join us: sign your name now. Ultimately, we cannot eradicate the issue through asylum alone—Oxfam America is continuing to work on the root causes of gender-based violence around the world. In the meantime, the people in very real danger at this moment must have the right to seek asylum and find safety. Sending women and girls back to the places they have fled and in some cases into the hands of their abusers themselves, as is all too common, putting them in danger of greater violence and even death.
It’s been six months since President Biden took office, and people fleeing violence can’t wait—President Biden must provide life-saving asylum to people fleeing persecution because of their gender. The reforms he is considering currently only focus on domestic violence—this is simply not enough. Thank you for standing with Oxfam America for people fleeing gender-based violence and persecution.
