Week In Review.

Last Monday evening, the Albany Common Council passed a “good cause” eviction measure -- the first of its kind for the state of New York. The local legislation ensures landlords and developers are prohibited from evicting tenants without justification. The measure brings the city one step closer to ending homelessness and prevents those in power from evicting tenants for financial or discriminatory reasons.  Activists who pushed for the measure hope to see other cities across the state follow suit. Kim Smith, VOCAL-NY Deputy Political Director, told NY Focusthat “good cause” will be a priority in Rochester, saying :  “As we talk about people having stable housing, first we want to make sure that we are dealing with evictions and people not being homeless, so one of our first steps has to be good cause.”
