Week In Review

The fight against Mayor de Blasio’s efforts to force thousands of homeless New Yorkers back into shelters instead of permanent housing has continued.   Last week, the Legal Aid Society filed a motion that ultimately convinced a federal court to halt the hotel transfers, noting that the Department of Homeless Services had violated the rights of homeless New Yorkers. And this past Monday,six leaders and staff members with VOCAL-NY were arrested after they took the lobby of the Department of Homeless Services at 4 World Trade Center to demand the administration drop their plans for forced transfers.   When asked in a media briefing on Wednesday why he wouldn’t skip shelters and move hotel residents into permanent housing, Mayor de Blasio responded saying some services were just “best provided in a shelter” -- to which VOCAL-NY Leader, Milton Perez, had this to say in response : “It is ridiculous for the Mayor to claim shelters are the best place for us to find housing. The chaos and miscommunication of the last week shows how unprepared they are. I have seen how the stability of the hotel has improved the outlook of so many of the guys around me. The Mayor has always shown a disregard for people in our situation, and this is nothing more than an attempt to get us back to business as usual.”
