In February 2021, Arctic blast storms knocked out power to communities across the South, leaving residents without water or heat for weeks.
Americans died from carbon monoxide poisoning running generators and cars to keep warm.
But the worst impacts were not felt equally : three-quarters of the people that died were people of color.
Residents of majority Black and brown neighborhoods had less access to disaster relief resources and were over-represented among the scores of people evacuated and displaced by the storms.
Natural disasters don’t discriminate – but systemic under-investment in infrastructure and disaster relief does.
We must ensure our most vulnerable communities are protected.
Thanks for standing up.
