Friend,
Join us on Thursday, February 3 at 5pm as we take direct action in response to Mayor Eric Adams' carceral and failed policies. While the events of the past week are indeed tragedies, we cannot allow the violence against these two officers to justify the continued investment in policies and policing that will destroy our communities. What : Vigil, March, and Speak Out to reject Adams' Blueprint and demand true community investments When : Thursday, Feb 3, 2022 at 5 PM Where : Harriet Tubman Memorial. (We will hold the vigil at the Harriet Tubman Memorial and then march to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Building for the speakout). Travel : 2 ,3, A, B, C, D to 125th Street Register : https://newyorkrallies.com/FundCommunitiesNotMoreCops (For those who are out of the city or are unable to attend, we are formulating plans for next steps that everyone will be able to join in on, so still register !)

Background & Demands : Last Monday, Mayor Eric Adams introduced his blueprint to combat gun violence in the city. The policies he outlined fail to center the needs of our communities and will worsen the existing overpolicing and underprotecting we already face. VOCAL-NY Civil Rights Union leaders, many of whom fought tirelessly for the reforms he is trying to undo, spoke out in anger (HERE). While the events of the past week are indeed tragedies, we cannot allow the violence against these two officers to justify the continued investment in policies and policing that will destroy our communities. On Thursday, Mayor Adams is scheduled to meet with President Biden to discuss this further. President Biden, the architect of a crime bill that continues to devastate our communities, isn’t the person Adams should be consulting, he should be speaking to those who are most impacted. We have made huge strides and we refuse to go back ! - Bail and discovery reforms are life saving measures that must remain in place.
- Adding a dangerousness standard would drive racial disparities, mass incarceration, and worsen the conditions on Rikers
- Raise the Age is critical for keeping our children safe. Prosecuting children with the intention of turning them against their community is not public safety.
- The Anti-Crime Unit has a history of abuse and violence against Black and brown communities. Their revival will only further harm us.
We cannot arrest our way out of centuries of divestments. Our communities need to be stabilized. There must be true investments in housing, healthcare, and non-police responses, such as violence interruption programs. That must be our first priority.
In Solidarity, Keli, Celina, Jawanza and the VOCAL-NY Family.
