Week in Review.

On Friday, leaders with VOCAL-NY’s Civil Rights Union stood with the End Qualified Immunity Campaign (EndQI NY) at a rally in Brooklyn to push for legislation to eliminate the shield that protects law enforcement from accountability. The legislation on the table at the Capitol right now would include ending the doctrine for correctional officers, such as those at Rikers Islandamidst possibility of the federal government taking over the prison. Polling, done in collaboration with End QI NY and Campaign Zero, shows that an outright majority of New Yorkers (61 percent), in urban, suburban, and rural communities alike, support eliminating qualified immunity for police and correction officers. VOCAL-NY leaders will continue to push for this legislation until law enforcement is held to the same standards as every other New Yorker.
