In 2012, I was accepted into the Congressional Black Caucus Institute Political Bootcamp, a 9-day program that annually gathers over 40 of the brightest Black politicos from around the country to give them a world-class experience in political organizing.
On the first morning of bootcamp, Representative Elijah Cummings was the guest speaker and he didn’t disappoint. Born in South Carolina to Sharecroppers who moved to Baltimore when he was a child, his booming baritone voice bounced off the walls as if we were inside of a small Baptist country church as he told us repeatedly : I wish I had your time. There is so much work to do and we must get it done, while we have the time !
As I reflect on that moment 10 years ago, and with Congressman Cummings not here with us any longer, and as we head to the 2022 midterm election, I’m reminded of his passion for the fierce urgency of now. We must demand that senate Democrats finish the job and protect the right to vote of millions of Americans. Republican-led state legislatures have introduced hundreds of bills that restrict the freedom to vote for millions of people, specifically Black and brown people ! We need federal voting rights protection.
We don’t have limitless amounts of time to get this done. The midterm elections are only a few months away, and we must deliver on our promises of strengthening our democracy and protecting the freedom to vote.
Democrats currently have a thin majority in both chambers of Congress. This may be one of the last times in years that we will get this opportunity. Let’s get this done for the American people. Demand that Senate Democrats deliver on promises of expanding voting rights protections for millions of eligible voters today ! Yours in the struggle,
Marquese Averett, Daily Kos.
