People all across the country are reimagining public safety in ways that support, rather than target, our communities. We need investments that fully fund a community-based, community-centered approach to safety.
Representative Cori Bush introduced the People’s Response Act early last year, which would would create a new public safety division within the Department of Health and Human Services, research alternative approaches to public safety, provide $7.5 billion in grant funding to state and local governments, and establish a $2.5 billion First Responder hiring grant to create thousands of jobs.
Black and brown communities have been disproportionately criminalized for mental health, substance abuse and simply just being poor. Our current law enforcement driven public safety isn’t working and we need to reimagine what public safety that prioritizes public health looks like.
It’s time that we pass meaningful legislation that would protect communities from unnecessary police intervention. Every emergency call doesn’t warrant the presence of law enforcement, and every offense doesn’t warrant jail. Congress must act now to address this ill in our society. Yours in the struggle,
