The Department of Homeland Security has named white supremacy as the gravest threat to the United States. That was never more apparent than during the recent racist shooting in a Buffalo supermarket that left ten people dead and three others injured.
The suspect specifically targeted Black people and posted a 180-page document outlining his belief in a conspiracy theory rooted in racism and white nationalism, known as “white replacement theory.” Proponents of this theory--which includes several conservative networks--believe that a shadowy elite cabal is seeking to replace white Americans with immigrants from Africa, the Middle East, and South America. Although this far-right theory has existed for decades, it has remained in the fringes until conservative commentators like Fox News’ Tucker Carlson began advocating for it. He alone has mentioned the replacement theory in over 400 episodes of his show. By bringing hateful conspiracies into the mainstream and using dangerous rhetoric that fans the flames of division, Fox News is just as responsible for the ensuing violence.
Fox News is out of control and no longer operating with anything remotely resembling journalistic integrity, if any existed in the first place. We must hold news organizations to a higher standard in order to be called news. Thank you for fighting with us,
Mayra Souza, Daily Kos.
