Starbucks recently announced plans to increase pay for workers - as long as they have no plans to unionize or have voted to form a union. This decision will impact thousands of employees at over 248 Starbucks locations.
Starbucks has indicated that it is unlawful for them to offer compensation and benefit increases in stores where employees have unionized or are making plans to unionize, but labor law experts are calling foul. Experts believe this action is probably illegal, noting that the announcement could influence upcoming elections by giving employees an incentive to vote against unionizing.
In short, this is yet again another attempt to push back against unionizing efforts happening across the chain. But there is some way we can push back.
Starbucks wants you to believe these attempts are coming from some nameless, faceless executive who is acting in the best interest of its brands, workers, and consumers. In reality, decisions are coming from notorious union-busting former CEO Howard Schultz and a panel of corporate executives that make up the board - who hold prominent positions in major brands like Ulta, Microsoft, LEGO, Dominoes, Apple, Colgate, and Nike.
And the good news is, we’ve compiled their contact information, so you can tell them just how you feel about their latest attempt to obstruct the rights of workers.
Keep fighting, Jayleen Alvarado, Daily Kos. |
