Friend,
We are exhaustingly used to this cycle. A racist takes a weapon of war into a community of Black and Brown people, robbing them of their lives. They’re often taken alive, there’s a media extravaganza, our leaders do nothing, and then it happens again.
The victims end up forgotten by everyone except the people who loved them – an unfillable void surrounded by frustration at a system that allowed their deaths to happen. In the end, there’s only one group we can rely on to make a difference : Ourselves.
It’s easy to feel powerless here. Mourning, grief, anger – don’t get us wrong, you need to allow yourself to feel these things. It’s important to let yourself process those emotions. But the one thing you can not give into is despair.
That’s what this shooter and people like him want. They want to terrify us, target us, kill us, and make us feel powerless in our own communities, our home, our country. They cannot win, because we won’t let them.
The most powerful message we can send is one of solidarity – of letting the people of Buffalo know that even though someone tried to tear their community apart, they are not alone. We are there for them, we are with them, and we will not let racially-motivated hate win.
We’ll be in touch soon to check in, share resources, and provide some next steps – because we won’t stand by in the wake of tragedy. We have collective power, and we’re going to use it.
In solidarity,
JaRel Clay
