Donald Trump was indicted Thursday evening on more than 30 counts related to business fraud.

Within moments of the news breaking, prominent Republican politicians were already lying about the nature of the indictment and falsely claiming it amounted to political persecution.

These dangerous lies will further incite Trump’s delusional base of supporters and increase the odds of a violent January 6th style attack taking place once again.

• "The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account." – Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy.

Telling Trump supporters that he was unfairly targeted for political purposes is dangerous and irresponsible. If Trump supporters engage in violence or otherwise attempt to take matters into their own hands, the Republican politicians who egged them on will bear some of the responsibility.
