Trump and the GOP are planning to raid the pockets of working Black families to give tax cuts to their wealthy corporate friends and donors.
Call on Congress to stop the Trump #TaxScam !
Dear friend.
Trump and the GOP want to steal $2.8 trillion dollars from Black families and hand it over to their corporate buddies who are funding their campaigns.1 As if the first round of tax cuts wasn’t bad enough, Trump and the GOP are proposing even deeper cuts to cover the ballooning deficit they created. These cuts would eviscerate Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and education budgets and do absolutely nothing to help working families who are struggling to get by due to rising costs of living.
We need to let every Member of Congress to know that will not allow another giveaway for the rich at the expense of our communities.
The new tax bill gives the wealthy, campaign donors, and businesses a financial windfall they don’t deserve. The richest 1% will receive a $33,000 tax cut, which is more than the average worker in the U.S. makes per year. This monetary gift will be paid for by a $2 trillion cut from Medicare and Medicaid, $157 billion from SNAP, and $59 billion from veterans benefits.2 The tax system needs to give breaks and benefits to working families, not wealthy corporations like Amazon who pay their workers poverty wages and don’t provide benefits.
Under the tax cuts that were passed earlier this year, corporations have announced $712 billion in stock buybacks that overwhelmingly benefit CEOs and wealthy shareholders, while only 4% of workers received a one-time bonus or wage hike.3 53 Republican members of Congress who voted for the tax bill will receive a tax cut of $280,000 thanks to a special loophole and the 6 largest Wall Street banks will save $12 billion in taxes, which would be enough money to give 3.2 million teachers a $3,800 pay raise.
The fatal cuts to working families and social service programs further exacerbate the centuries old racial wealth gap between Black and white earners. Because white households have 10 times the wealth of Black households, any tax plan that’s biased toward the wealthy, will also be racially biased against Black people.4 Black workers are overrepresented among the lowest wage workers, who will actually see their taxes increase under Trump’s new tax plan.5
The tax system is broken and Trump and the GOP are taking a hammer to the glass shards that remain. This tax scam does nothing to boost the economy or generate job growth, it only gives cash bonuses to the wealthy elite off the backs of low-income Black workers. At a time when the cost of housing is soaring, the racial wealth gap keeps widening, and more and more workers wages are remaining stagnant, we don’t need to give anymore handouts to millionaires and billionaires. We need a tax policy that works for the many and not the few. We need bold leaders in Congress to stand up and call Trump and the GOP out on their scam.
