Dear friend,
In February, the first migrant facility for children opened under the Biden administration.
This is not okay, never has been okay, never will be okay — no matter the administration or party.
Our immigration system is built on a carceral framework, and it’s time for the whole system to be reimagined. A lot of people ask, "Well, what else can we do ?"
The answer is : There’s a lot we can do.
That’s why Alexandria joined her colleagues including Rep. Pramila Jayapal and FIRM Action — the nation’s largest immigrant rights network — to introduce the Roadmap to Freedom Resolution.
The Roadmap to Freedom is a bold, progressive vision for immigration reform that calls for :
- A pathway to citizenship for 11 million people
- An end to inhumane and unjust family detention
- Investment in humane, community-based alternatives to detention and demilitarizing the border
- Increased protections for immigrant workers
Short term, there are also immediate steps we can take to protect migrant children including : requiring influx facilities with children to be licensed, changing the way these facilities are contracted, and shutting down facilities with controversial records.
But we shouldn’t stop there. Our immigration system has been broken for decades — long before Trump came into office; and that’s why a bold reimagination is so important.
With a new Congress and a new administration in the White House, we must seize this moment to go bigger and bolder on reforming our immigration system.
The Roadmap to Freedom is the north star for fair, equitable immigration reform that centers family unity, combats injustice, and works for everyone.
Immigrant families can’t wait any longer.
Pa’lante,
Team AOC.
