Dear friend, The history of racism in Hollywood is long and unforgivable. To this day, Black artists, producers, writers, and performers are routinely overlooked by industry leaders despite their cultural resonance and critical acclaim. But there’s never been a more perfect opportunity to reverse patterns of exclusion and discrimination and truly change the trajectory of Hollywood for good. That’s why Color Of Change Hollywood has its eye on transforming the entertainment industry. By engaging in the creative process at every level of development, we’re able to ensure that honest and responsible content is created while also holding the industry accountable for the harm they’re causing. Last Wednesday, #ChangeHollywood joined with major American film and television production companies to release an updated inclusion rider and policy — a clause that is added to an actor’s contract that ensures gender and racial equity in hiring — for the TV and film industry. The updated inclusion rider also provides guidance to its adopters on four goalposts : deepening hiring pools, setting targets/benchmarks, measuring their effectiveness, and implementing self-accountability measures.1

We need Color Of Change Hollywood now more than ever. Already our work with Hollywood has developed storylines about Black people that are multi-dimensional and authentic. We’re slowly changing the rules across one of the most powerful industries in the world. And, friend, we are winning : - Our accountability campaigns have gotten shows like COPS and Live PD canceled from various networks.
- We’ve successfully pressured Saturday Night Live to hire Black women both in front of the camera and behind it.
- We’ve helped dozens of shows avoid harm to Black communities with our consulting services for shows like ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and Netflix’s Seven Seconds.
- We’ve helped the industry promote work that supports Black communities by collaborating on content rollout with HBO, A&E, Netflix, and AMC Theatres.
- We’ve amplified the fight for racial justice in voting and criminal justice by producing content with celebrities to challenge harmful narratives about Black people and rally activism towards change.
- We’re also telling our own stories and providing Black creatives with a platform to do so with our #TellBlackStories podcast and live series.
