Dear friend, it's been just over a year since George Floyd was murdered at the hands of police. Across the country, activists took to the streets to demand justice, and to demand systemic reforms to stop police from getting away with murder. But many people demanded much more than reforms. They demanded that we defund police departments and invest in community alternatives to police. Here at Daily Kos Liberation League, we've discussed what it means to defund the police. But are there viable community-based alternatives to the police ? How can we keep people safe without police ? How can we hold people who harm community members safe without police ? Ejeris Dixon is an organizer and political activist with 20 years experience of anti-violence work inside frontline communities. She's also the co-editor of an anthology of essays and stories about how people are practicing transformative justice -- keeping communities safe and holding harm-doers accountable without police intervention. During this webinar, Ejeris will discuss the movement to defund police and reinvest those funds in community-based public safety. She will address one of the biggest fears about a world without police--what about people who do real physical violence ? What do we do about them ? There will be a Q&A following Ejeris's presentation. We ask that you come to this webinar with curiosity (though your skepticism is also welcome) and willingness to explore new models that are still developing. There are no perfect answers, but there are solid examples to follow and build on. Want to learn more? Join us Tuesday at 5pm ET / 2pm PT for Transformative Justice with Ejeris Dixon. Keep fighting, Irna Landrum, Daily Kos Liberation League. | |||||
