Mark Zuckerberg has long known about Facebook’s toxic effects--including on the mental health of teenagers--but chose to bury those findings while gaslighting the public by downplaying and denying the platform causes any harm.
Not only did Facebook ignore its own research, but Mark Zuckerberg has decided to develop Instagram for Kids, a product for children under 13. That's all we need, more young kids exposed to their dangerous algorithm.
Damning new evidence from the Wall Street Journal unveiled many of Mark Zuckerberg's lies. Facebook permitted the spread of misinformation. Their "XCheck" program gave VIP users special treatment, including Donald Trump before his suspension, by shielding them from the site's typical rule enforcement process.
Although the company pretends to crack down on misinformation, it refuses to be honest about how often misinformation is viewed and spread on the platform, and blocks researchers who try to find out. This isn't the first time Facebook has shown inaction against misinformation. After the 2020 election, Facebook changed its algorithm by changing news sources' quality requirements. But then right-wingers complained, and Zuckerberg immediately caved, going back to the old algorithm that promoted hyper-partisan hacks.
By improving their algorithm and punting the outrage factory to the back of the line, Facebook hurt its usage numbers. Their solution ? Going back to prioritizing profits over people's lives and a healthy democracy.
It’s time for Facebook, a company made up of individuals who weren't elected, to stop using their power indiscriminately. Thank you for fighting with us,
Mayra Souza, Daily Kos.
