U.S (ACLU Texas) : What you need to know about Texas' new laws.

 

 

 

Friend –   The 88th Texas Legislature's regular session was one of the most authoritarian displays of government overreach in state history, which is why we're breaking down exactly what these new laws mean for Texans. Here are three major ways our lives will change as a result: Texans will have less control over our bodies after Texas politicians banned life-saving health care for trans youth and restricted our freedom to express ourselves through art forms like drag. Our public education system will be more politicized and less inclusive with new laws that censor books in public school libraries; shut down programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at public colleges and universities; and ban trans athletes from participating in college sports. Voters will have less power to shape how our local communities are run in an unprecedented power grab that gives state leaders control of important local decisions and the authority to replace democratically-elected district attorneys. These are just some of the new laws that passed. While we didn't stop these bad bills, our advocacy was nevertheless powerful and inspiring. With the help of supporters like you, we were able to defend many of our civil rights and individual liberties – and prevent politicians from passing a wide range of other harmful laws targeting students, immigrants, and Texans with lower incomes. In the process, we were also able to claim some hard-earned victories, including : We're now one of 20 states with long-overdue protections against race-based hair discrimination. We made voting more accessible to disabled Texans. We secured $2.2 million in funding to help reduce unnecessary arrests and mass incarceration. When we join together across races and places, we can demand what our families need to make a good living, pursue our dreams, and build a good life.
