Friend : Recent heat waves, floods, and wildfires have shown once again that climate change is an existential threat that transcends borders, economies, and political parties.

The upcoming COP28 climate talks in Dubai this November could be a crucial opportunity to forge the path toward a sustainable future. The question is whether Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and President-Designate of the upcoming COP28, can build that path — or whether he’ll prioritize his fossil fuel industry ties.

The stakes are too high to leave it up to chance. That’s why in an unprecedented show of force 133 lawmakers from the United States and the European Parliament have called for al Jaber’s removal — and we can pile on the pressure by echoing their demand.

President Biden has enormous influence when it comes to al Jaber’s position, and can use his considerable clout to strengthen calls for al Jaber’s ouster. He’s heard from politicians, but what would it look like if he heard from tens of thousands of activists speaking with one voice ?

Help demonstrate the United States’ commitment to climate justice by pushing the Biden administration to follow through on its environmental pledges. Tell President Biden: Call for Sultan Al Jaber to be removed as President-Designate from COP28.

ACT NOW

A senior executive of a major oil company presiding over climate talks ? The conflict is simply too big to ignore. As the CEO of ADNOC, al Jaber is responsible for maximizing the company's profits.

Under his leadership ADNOC pumped 2.7 million barrels of oil per day in 2021. According to OPEC he aims to nearly double that output by 2027. Increasing the production and consumption of fossil fuels — a major contributor to global warming — is in direct conflict with the leadership role he is to assume at COP28.

Al Jaber’s appointment sends a horrible message to the world that the fossil fuel industry is controlling the agenda of the United Nations’ premier international climate meeting.

As Zeina Khalil Hajj, head of global campaigning for 350.org, put it, “COP28 cannot turn into an expo for the fossil fuel industry."

The fight against climate change should be free of ulterior motives and self-interest. We need leaders who will prioritize the health of the planet and the survival of future generations over the survival of industries that contribute to global warming.

Activists like you can ensure COP28 is a success for climate justice, friend. Let’s show the world that we are committed to leading the fight against climate change.

Sign now to call on President Biden to advocate for impartial and unbiased leadership at COP28 by pushing to remove Sultan Al Jaber as President-Designate.

Thank you for working for peace,

Sam, Amy, Raimy, and the Win Without War team.
