On Thursday, the New York City Council successfully voted to override
Mayor Adams’s reckless veto of bills to improve
CityFHEPS, NYC’s housing voucher program. This override – the first to
occur against a mayor’s veto in 12 years – ensures that the CityFHEPS
bills will pass. These bills would
reform the rental assistance program by making vouchers readily
accessible to the tens of thousands of people facing homelessness or
eviction. VOCAL-NY’s Homelessness Union worked for years
to get this package of bills passed and in the last month, applied
pressure for the City Council’s override campaign. As a result of these
efforts, it will be easier for those stuck in shelters or on the streets
to find a safe and affordable place to call home. On Tuesday, VOCAL-NY leaders and allies rallied
in front of Gov. Hochul’s NYC office to protest her inaction on the
overdose crisis and demand that she immediately authorizes overdose
prevention centers across New York State. To support this campaign, you
can take action by calling Gov. Hochul and demanding
she establishes life-saving OPCs. Also, this past Tuesday, VOCAL-NY leaders and allies held an emergency rally to protest deaths in NYC jails.
