This isn’t the real-life cage match Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg said they’d fight — but it is a cage match between their mega-corporations.
Zuckerberg’s Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and the Metaverse, just launched Threads, a direct competitor to Twitter. More than 30 million people have already signed up for Threads. Billionaires are battling each other over who controls the internet, our data, and our access to information. This is dangerous, especially as Zuckerberg attempts to take over another huge chunk of social media usage.
These Big Tech billionaires are way too powerful and have way too much control over our data. Congress has the authority to wrestle some of this power away from Zuckerberg and Musk by passing a Billionaire’s Tax.
Musk wrecked Twitter — one billionaire bought a social media company and totally screwed it up. Now, Zuckerberg – another billionaire – is trying to take advantage of Musk’s failure in his own quest to completely take over the internet and control our data.
These are platforms owned by mega-corporations that have been accused of widespread issues of disinformation, harassment campaigns, racism, inciting violence, mishandling personal data, and so much more.
These are two billionaires and mega-corporations having it out over who can control our data, information, and internet usage.
Musk made $140 billion during the pandemic. Billionaires on the whole added $1 trillion to their collective wealth. Yet, the billionaire class pays far less of a percentage of their earnings in taxes than the average American. Billionaires exploit our tax system with every loophole, and then some.
Billionaires like Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos, and others will continue to use their wealth to gain power over our lives and build corporate empires. Zuckerberg and Meta took another big step in that direction with Threads — Meta’s empire is already so big and powerful.
Protecting our data and internet usage from billionaires will rely on action from Congress — it will rely on Congress taking power away from Musk and Zuckerberg by making them pay their fair share of taxes.
