Mourning VOCAL-NY Board Member, Linda Beal, 1960-2023
|
|
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our Board Member and long-time Westchester leader Linda Beal.
Linda was a founding member of our Westchester chapter, a member of the
NY HIV Planning Council, and was vocal in demanding investments,
political action, and organizing in Yonkers and the surrounding area. Linda was a leader in the fight for improving housing access for people living with HIV. Last year, she penned an Op-ED sharing her experience living with the virus and called for statewide investment in stable housing. As
her health deteriorated, Linda remained an active Board Member guiding
the organization. Linda will be remembered for her fire and friendship.
Her activism and love. And her commitment to ending AIDS, the drug war,
mass incarceration and homelessness. Rest In Power Linda.

This
past Tuesday, leaders with the Civil Rights Union rallied in Foley
Square ahead of the Board of Correction’s meeting to demand officials
put a stop to NYC DOC’s violence by committing to decarceration. On
Wednesday, Homelessness Union leaders joined
the NYC Fair Chance for Housing Coalition’s speakout to demand the end
of housing discrimination against formerly incarcerated people. Also
this week, Tracie Adams, a leader in VOCAL-NY’s Positive Leaders Union
based in Rochester, was spotlighted on social
media. |
